03 · travel regions

Choose your travel region

Every region leads to a concrete base decision.

01

major city base

Amsterdam and North Holland

Amsterdam earns a local night when you want more than the canal belt in daylight: an early museum slot, a second district or a slower evening after the daytime rush.

Open the guide
02

architecture and port base

Rotterdam and South Holland

Rotterdam is not one compact old centre. A night adds value when architecture, river, port edge and a neighbourhood evening form the trip.

Open the guide
03

compact rail base

Utrecht and central Netherlands

Utrecht combines a walkable old core with its greatest advantage: a central rail position. A night works best when city time and one regional excursion belong together.

04

urban or local Limburg base

South Limburg

Choose Maastricht for districts and city evenings; Valkenburg for two local blocks, hills and leisure.

05

northern city base

Northern Netherlands

Groningen is more than a quick northern stop. Its distance from the Randstad, youthful city energy and access to the surrounding province make a night logical once the north is the destination.

06

design-and-industry base

North Brabant

Eindhoven builds its stay value around design, industrial heritage and dispersed districts. A night beats a day trip when Strijp-S, the centre and a second creative area each get their own block.

07

city-or-coast decision

Coast and islands

Use a city for one flexible coast block; stay by the sea or on an island when nature and evening quiet drive the trip.

08

nature region

Veluwe and river country

The Veluwe is a large nature region, not a village. Arnhem, Apeldoorn, Ede-Wageningen and park entrances create different journeys. The right base follows the route, not the label Veluwe.

Where to stay in the Netherlands

The Netherlands looks compact, but the wrong base adds transfers, return journeys or a lost evening every day. First decide which second time block you want to preserve.

03

The Netherlands without a car

Rail is often the backbone between cities. On islands, at the coast and in nature areas, risk shifts to ferry, regional bus, bike, gateway and the final return.

04

First trip to the Netherlands

A first trip is stronger with two or three clear Dutch landscapes: major city, compact historic city and coast, island, nature or South Limburg.

05

Amsterdam or Rotterdam?

Amsterdam concentrates international museums, canals and visitor demand; Rotterdam spreads architecture, river and port identity across distinct districts. The fast train makes either city a day trip from the other, so the evening decides the base.

Open the guide
06

Amsterdam or Utrecht?

Amsterdam offers the broadest city and culture range. Utrecht gives a compact old core and a central rail position, and NS's every-night night train links Utrecht Centraal with Amsterdam Centraal, so a late Amsterdam evening does not rule out sleeping in Utrecht.

07

City or coast in the Netherlands?

The Dutch coast is often near a city, but wind, weather, final bus, cycle route and evening light bound coastal time differently from a city day.

Open the guide
08

Maastricht or Valkenburg?

Maastricht and Valkenburg share a travel region but solve different stay questions. The train between them takes 10 to 15 minutes, so a day trip is easy; the night has to earn its place by keeping an evening or a first morning local.

09

Day trip or overnight?

A night is not a reward for distance. It earns its place when it unlocks a second useful block, a slower evening, early access or a difficult final mile.

Small cities and day trips

Not every famous place name needs its own stay guide. Some are strong day trips; others earn a night when a second block or landscape is added.

12

Haarlem or Amsterdam?

Haarlem and Amsterdam sit on one short rail corridor: Visit Haarlem gives trains every 7–10 minutes on average and under 20 minutes to Amsterdam. Either city can be the base; the choice is where your evenings and first mornings belong, and how you get back at night.

Open the guide
13

Delft or Rotterdam?

Delft and Rotterdam are rail neighbours with opposite stay logic: In Delft gives 12 minutes by train from Rotterdam, with the Markt a five-minute walk from Delft station; Rotterdam only works when its districts are connected.

Open the guide
14

Leiden or The Hague?

Leiden and The Hague share one rail region: Visit Leiden gives 12 minutes from Den Haag Centraal, with trains every ten minutes. Leiden is a compact museum city close to its station; The Hague adds a government quarter, distinct districts and the coast at Scheveningen and Kijkduin.

Open the guide
15

Nijmegen or Arnhem?

Nijmegen and Arnhem are close rail neighbours, each with its station about five minutes' walk from the centre. Nijmegen pairs the Waal riverfront with hills towards Groesbeek; Arnhem pairs a city and museums with De Hoge Veluwe, whose entrances are not at the station.

Open the guide
16

Groningen or Leeuwarden?

Groningen and Leeuwarden are linked by a direct train, so either city works as a day trip from the other. The real choice is where your evenings belong and which ferry port or region you need to reach first thing in the morning.

Open the guide
17

Den Bosch or Eindhoven?

's-Hertogenbosch and Eindhoven are on the same rail line, so either works as a day trip from the other. Den Bosch is a compact historic centre with the station a short walk west of the core; Eindhoven spreads its value over the centre, Strijp-S and further districts.
