Where to stay in the Veluwe: choose the gateway before the accommodation
The Veluwe is a large nature region, not a village. Arnhem, Apeldoorn, Ede-Wageningen and park entrances create different journeys. The right base follows the route, not the label Veluwe.
De Hoge Veluwe National Park has separate entrances at Otterlo, Hoenderloo and Schaarsbergen; the park recommends Schaarsbergen or Hoenderloo because Otterlo is the busiest. Without a car, its FAQ points travellers via Ede or Arnhem to the Ingang Otterlo bus stop and via Apeldoorn to Hoenderloo Centrum, and bus 106 runs from Ede via Ingang Otterlo and the Kröller-Müller Museum to the park centre. Rail reaches regional cities, not every trail; recheck bus, park access and bike options live.
Recheck the live journey planner, engineering work and the final connection shortly before travel; timetables and access are not fixed editorial facts.

Plan the morning and evening
First block
Sleep in Otterlo when the park is the main purpose and the first morning should start at an entrance, or in Arnhem for city services with the park as a day block.
Second block
Choose Hoenderloo for another park gateway and the forest side, or Apeldoorn for northern routes; by public transport the park's own advice pairs Apeldoorn with the Hoenderloo Centrum stop.
04
Use it as a base — but not by default
Arnhem suits city plus southern park access; Apeldoorn northern routes; Otterlo a park-focused stay. Do not choose by straight-line map distance when the gateway is on the other side.
