Nijmegen and Arnhem are close rail neighbours, each with its station about five minutes' walk from the centre. Nijmegen pairs the Waal riverfront with hills towards Groesbeek; Arnhem pairs a city and museums with De Hoge Veluwe, whose entrances are not at the station.

Nijmegen
Nijmegen combines urban history, the Waal riverfront and hillier landscapes towards Groesbeek. A night works when city and walking do not have to share one rushed half-day.
Arnhem suits a city evening paired with a separate museum or park day. De Hoge Veluwe has different entrances; a hotel marketed as ‘Veluwe’ does not guarantee a practical route.

Nijmegen wins when
The Waalkade evening and the upper centre both get time.
Groesbeek or the Ooijpolder forms the second block.
Nijmegen-Oost or Lent is a deliberate choice, not a fallback.

Arnhem wins when
De Hoge Veluwe is the first morning. The park recommends the Schaarsbergen or Hoenderloo entrance because Otterlo is the busiest; without a car from Arnhem, its FAQ says to take the bus to the Ingang Otterlo stop.
Museums and city time fill the afternoon before the park.
The Veluwe guide's access logic, not the city name, decides the address.

Do not commute for its own sake
Intercity trains make either city a day trip from the other. Sleep where the first morning begins: by the river for Nijmegen, on the park route for Arnhem. Late at night, NS runs an extra late train between Utrecht and Arnhem or Nijmegen, and night bus 806 links Arnhem and Nijmegen only on the night from Saturday to Sunday; check both for your date.

Arnhem has a separate city stay guide; the wider Veluwe and its park gateways remain separate geographies. No CBS city total exists for either city here, so demand stays qualified at the wider geography and nothing on this page is a ranking.
