Four base families
Major city
Amsterdam for maximum range; Rotterdam for architecture and Maas; The Hague for city plus sea.
Compact rail city
Utrecht, Haarlem, Leiden or Delft for walkability and focused regional trips.
A region of its own
Maastricht or Valkenburg, Groningen, Leeuwarden and Zwolle when the region itself is the destination.
Landscape
Texel, Zeeland or the Veluwe when early nature and a local evening outweigh rail efficiency.

When one base is enough
A central base saves hotel changes but does not justify long commuting days. Count door to door, not only the fastest train time.
- Most days sit in the same rail region.
- You want to return to the same city each evening.
- Excursions have one clear purpose and no fragile late return.
- Late evenings stay on the night-train axis: NS's every-night night train links Rotterdam, The Hague HS, Leiden, Schiphol, Amsterdam Centraal and Utrecht Centraal; elsewhere the last regular train ends the evening.
03
When to split
Split by travel logic, not provincial borders. Amsterdam plus Maastricht is a clear two-base trip; Amsterdam plus Haarlem is often unnecessary unless Haarlem evenings and the coast are the point.
- An island or nature area needs early access.
- South Limburg or the north gets more than one full day.
- The local evening is part of the trip.
- The final connection would control the day.
