Where to stay in Amsterdam: choose the evening first, then the area
Amsterdam earns a local night when you want more than the canal belt in daylight: an early museum slot, a second district or a slower evening after the daytime rush.
Centraal, Zuid and Sloterdijk create different rail and metro patterns: NS's Intercity direct to Schiphol and Rotterdam calls at Amsterdam Zuid, not Centraal, while the every-night night train calls at Amsterdam Centraal. Free GVB ferries to Noord leave from behind Centraal, and the Buiksloterweg crossing also runs through the night. Choose around the daily anchor, not the word Amsterdam alone.
Recheck the live journey planner, engineering work and the final connection shortly before travel; timetables and access are not fixed editorial facts.

Plan the morning and evening
First block
Sleep in the Canal Belt and Jordaan for walking and evening life, or in De Pijp and the Museum Quarter for early museum time and restaurants with tram access.
Second block
Choose Oost for a more local evening with straightforward links to the centre and stations, or Noord for waterfront space with the free ferry behind Centraal. Then choose by the station you will use most: Centraal for the night train, Zuid for the fast train to Schiphol and Rotterdam.

Use it as a base — but not by default
Haarlem, Zaanse Schans, Waterland and the coast can extend a stay, but not all in one day. Use Amsterdam as a regional base only when returning to the city still adds evening value.
