Where to stay in Delft: choose the quiet after the day trip
Delft is a convincing day trip, but a local night changes the pace: early canals, a quiet evening and room to separate craft, history and one neighbouring destination.

Stay orientation
Four areas, one deliberate base decision
Schematic decision map — not a street or route map.
Oude DelftFor canals, heritage and the most direct historic atmosphere.
Market and east coreFor main sights and restaurants within a short walk.
Station sideFor easy arrival and excursions without putting the old town far away.
TU DelftFor campus needs and modern space; less suited to a classic city evening.
Delft station is immediately west of the old core, a five-minute walk from the Markt, and In Delft gives 12 minutes by train from Rotterdam and The Hague. HTM tram 1 runs from Delft to Scheveningen; NS's night-train page does not list Delft, so check the last train after an evening elsewhere. The university campus and outer areas need a bike, tram or bus decision.
Recheck the live journey planner, engineering work and the final connection shortly before travel; timetables and access are not fixed editorial facts.

Plan the morning and evening
First block
Sleep along Oude Delft or around the Market and east core, so canals, main sights and restaurants stay within a short walk after the day visitors leave.
Second block
Use the day for Delft's heritage or for one rail day to Rotterdam or The Hague. Choose the station side, immediately west of the old core, for easy arrival and excursions; TU Delft suits campus needs rather than a classic city evening.
04
Use it as a base — but not by default
Rotterdam and The Hague are easy rail neighbours. Delft is the better base when historic scale and quiet evenings matter more than late big-city choice.
