Maastricht and Valkenburg share a travel region but solve different stay questions. The train between them takes 10 to 15 minutes, so a day trip is easy; the night has to earn its place by keeping an evening or a first morning local.

Maastricht
Maastricht is South Limburg's strongest urban base. Its official visitor structure separates eight districts; a night works when two areas and an evening belong together. Valkenburg is better when hills, spa, caves or village life are the anchor.

Valkenburg is one day trip: Maastricht station is in Wyck, so a room in Wyck or Céramique keeps that train a short walk away.

The connection decides the evening
Maastricht Marketing gives 10 to 15 minutes by train to Valkenburg, about 30 to 40 minutes by direct bus and about 11 km by bike (checked 2 October 2026). The municipality has three stations on the line: Valkenburg, Houthem-St. Gerlach and Schin op Geul, so match the station to the area you stay in.
If your evenings are in Maastricht, a Valkenburg room makes the last train back part of every night. If your mornings belong to Valkenburg's hills, spa or caves, a Maastricht room adds the outward trip to every start. Check the last connection for your date in the live journey planner.

Geographic boundary
Valkenburg figures on this site cover the whole municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul, not only the town. Maastricht hotel figures use a different CBS scope, so they are context rather than a like-for-like comparison.
