Leiden is compact enough for a day trip and rich enough for a night. The difference is the second part: several museums, courtyards, a quiet evening or landscape beyond the ring canals.
Leiden Centraal is west of the old centre: Visit Leiden puts the Beestenmarkt five minutes and the Breestraat ten minutes on foot from the station, with trains every ten minutes from Den Haag Centraal (12 minutes) and Amsterdam Centraal (35 minutes). NS's every-night night train calls at Leiden. Coast, bulb region and surrounding municipalities require a separate bus, bike or rail check.
Recheck the live journey planner, engineering work and the final connection shortly before travel; timetables and access are not fixed editorial facts.

Plan the morning and evening
First block
Sleep in the old centre for canals, courtyards and evening life without transport; Pieterswijk offers quieter streets in the southwest core.
Second block
Give the daytime to the museums, or to a coast or bulb-region trip. Choose the station side, west of the old centre, for the museum cluster, rail and early excursions; stay outside the ring canals only after checking the daily walk or cycle route.
04
Use it as a base — but not by default
The Hague, Haarlem and the coast are accessible, but Leiden works best as its own compact base. Do not use it to stack every Randstad destination into one day.
