Amsterdam offers the broadest city and culture range. Utrecht gives a compact old core and a central rail position, and NS's every-night night train links Utrecht Centraal with Amsterdam Centraal, so a late Amsterdam evening does not rule out sleeping in Utrecht.

Amsterdam
Amsterdam earns a local night when you want more than the canal belt in daylight: an early museum slot, a second district or a slower evening after the daytime rush.
Utrecht combines a walkable old core with its greatest advantage: a central rail position. A night works best when city time and one regional excursion belong together.

01
Amsterdam as base
Several Amsterdam districts and museums get their own blocks.
You want to keep Amsterdam evenings.
Most excursions sit in North Holland.
02
Utrecht as base
Walkability and compact evenings matter.
You travel across several rail corridors.
Amsterdam is one day, not the whole trip, and a late return rides the night train to Utrecht Centraal.
03
The map error
A central location does not shorten every door-to-door trip. Count the walk to Utrecht Centraal, transfers, arrival in the right Amsterdam district and final return. The night train calls at Amsterdam Centraal, not Zuid or Sloterdijk, so a late return starts from the centre.
04
Split or stay put
For a short trip, one base is usually enough. Split only when Amsterdam evenings and Utrecht morning calm both create real value, not to tick off two hotels.
